This Malted Condensed Milk Ice Cream is rich and creamy. A perfect warm weather treat for the entire family!
You guys, I’ve been having some issues with rage. Not road rage or anything quite so dangerous. No, I’m talking about a different form of rage.
One that I believe is common among many in our society but hasn’t been addressed by the media. I think people are too ashamed to speak up about it right now and if we can raise public awareness, perhaps more citizens will be able to come forward.
That’s why I’m willing to talk about my problem right here and now. I’m speaking of grocery store rage.
I definitely spend more time in grocery stores than the average person. I’m lucky enough to live in a neighborhood where I can walk to most places.
I don’t spend a lot of time in the car and that’s a good thing because gas prices are really high and I’d rather spend that money on ingredients. But I’ve noticed that many of the issues I used to deal with as a commuter can also be found at the grocery store.
You’ve got the slow cart drivers, lazily weaving between the right side of the aisle and the left side, making it very difficult to pass. You’ve got the people who have Very Important Places To Be, and won’t hesitate to cut you off at the deli counter.
You’ve got indecisive folk who hover at the egg section trying to decide what to buy while the rest of us who KNOW WHICH STUPID EGGS WE WANT have to wait patiently behind them. They don’t seem to understand that you can’t just stop in the middle of the road!
It creates GRID LOCK. HONK.
I hope that by speaking up today I have opened up the possibility for dialogue about this important problem that is plaguing our society. Thank you.
Malted Condensed Milk Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 6 large egg yolks
- 2 cups half-and-half (or 1 cup whole milk + 1 cup heavy cream)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup malted milk powder
- 1 (14-ounce can) sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- In a small bowl, vigorously whisk the egg yolks together for several seconds until smooth.
- In a medium saucepan, heat up the half and half and vanilla extract until it just begins to simmer. Pour some of the hot liquid into the egg yolks while whisking to temper them. Then add the contents of the bowl back into the saucepan and turn the heat to low.
- Add the malted milk powder and sweetened condensed milk and whisk to combine the ingredients in the saucepan. Continue stirring over low heat for several minutes until the mixture begins to thicken slightly.
- Remove the heat, pour the liquid into a bowl and allow it to cool for several minutes. Then place plastic wrap directly against the top of the liquid and refrigerate until cold. The plastic wrap will prevent a skin from forming.
- Using an ice cream maker, prepare ice cream according to the manufacturer's instructions.

I happen to love sweetened cond milk. I mean, it’s just the best. This looks wonderful & great job on the photos. Whenever I shoot ice cream, it’s always dicey if I’m going to get the shots before it all melts (has happened many times…whoops). Your images are gorgeous!
Jennifer Farley says
I could eat sweetened condensed milk with a spoon, it’s that good. Oddly enough, ice cream is one of my favorite things to shoot because it gets so messy. I just plan everything out first and set up the camera/props. Then the longer I shoot, the more drips I get and the prettier it looks!

You crack me up!! I’ve been known to show a little rage at the grocery store… maybe once or twice ;)
Love this ice cream recipe!
Jennifer Farley says
I’m pretty good at internalizing my rage. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing :)
Tieghan says
LOVED this post!! I totally get grocery store rage! LOL
Loving this ice cream!
Jennifer Farley says
I’m glad it’s not just me!
Heather says
I wrote a post on that awhile back… I’m so glad I’m not the only one that thinks grocery store traffic is THE WORST! And no one ever wants to drive on the right side of the “road”!! We are making ice cream this week for grandpa’s birthday. This looks great! Maybe I’ll try it out!
Jennifer Farley says
Let me know if you do! This seems like it could be a grandpa pleaser.
Lauren says
This. Looks. Amazing.
I am a total sucker for sweetened condensed milk… add malted milk and turn it into an ice cream? I’m dead. I died just then.
Jennifer Farley says
So am I! I’ll see you in heaven with this ice cream. :D
Joan says
Jenny, you need to move out of the city, just like road rage, we left it behind when we moved to a small town 15 years ago. Now we stroll through the grocery store and chat with neighbors! Your Ice Cream sounds fabulous and looks so creamy good. Can’t wait to make up a batch!
Jennifer Farley says
I grew up in a small town and so did my husband. I don’t think we could ever go back. City living isn’t perfect but small towns have their own issues! We love being right near the action with lots to do in walking distance.
Kayle (The Cooking Actress) says
Ahhh grocery store rage. I know it well.
This ice cream is amazing. It looks so creamy and delicious and I love the twist of the malted milk!
Jennifer Farley says
thanks! malted milk is one of my favorite flavors right now!
Laura (Tutti Dolci) says
I think we’ve all been there, nothing worse than a traffic jam at the grocery store! This ice cream looks too good to pass up, love your shots!
Jennifer Farley says
Thanks, Laura!

You got me with the name of this very ice-cream! I love malt and condensed milk, so this combination is heavenly for me!
Jennifer Farley says
I do as well. Putting them together was magical!
Gail says
I say HONK if you like this ice cream! HOOOOOONK!
Chung-Ah says
Hilarious! I ran a lady over with my shopping cart. I think it was an accident but honestly, she just stopped walking in the middle of the walkway and I was in a hurry to get the hell out of there!
Anyway, love this ice cream. I actually need this ice cream. It’s hot here in LA!
Maureen says
You know what bugs me? Two women totally blocking the aisle having a conversation. If I had a knife I’d stick ’em. (metaphorically speaking) It drives me up the wall. You have to say “excuse me” to get around and they look at you like they’re in the freakin park.
I really like this ice cream!
Jennifer Farley says
Ha, I almost mentioned that one as well but I couldn’t figure out how to fit it into my driving theme. It happens all the time here and I often get the death stare when I say “excuse me.”
Marie says
YES! Grocery store rage! Bahhhhhh
But, more importantly, this ice cream looks ridiculously good!
Jennifer says
lol, I know what you mean about the grocery store. I just feel like punting people like a football. Ohhh, what’s worse then grocery store people, Target people! I get so angry in there, just move, don’t stand in the middle of the isle and talk on your cell phone. MOVE! Makes me crazy!!
Your ice cream sounds incredible!! I have an ice cream maker and you inspired me to pull it out, it’s suppose to be 90’s all week here and ice cream would hit the spot!
ashley - baker by nature says
o-m-g… i need this!
