This Nutella Irish Cream Milkshake is rich and decadent.
Nutella Irish Cream Milkshake
When Erin from Dinners, Dishes and Desserts asked me to guest post for her while she travels through Japan I immediately agreed. Just being able to talk to someone else about Japan was so exciting. Jeff and I spent 3 weeks there in 2009 and I’ve had daydreams about going back ever since. I had no idea how much I’d fall in love with everything- the culture, the scenery, the food (of course)… we spent time in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima. We had dinner and drinks at The Park Hyatt where Lost in Translation was filmed. We stood on top of Mt. Fuji and wandered the endless underground malls between subway stations. We sample kobe in Kobe. If you’ll indulge me, I’d love to share some photos from our trip.
Japan at night is a beautiful sight to behold. It’s reminiscent of Times Square in NYC but without the garbage. It’s all bright lights and pleasant jingles. There’s an electricity in the air that I can’t quite describe.
It’s quite beautiful during the day as well. These images are from a temple in Kyoto. Everywhere you look is a masterpiece photo. Zen is certainly the right word.
It’s not all zen everywhere you look, though. The signs. Holy crap, the signs.
Clearly they knew I was coming.
This notice greeted us at our Osaka hotel. Do you know how tempted I was to call the front desk and say “I just vomited in the room, will you please come clean it up?” Not really, but we laughed so hard at this we were in tears.
One of my favorite days involved a visit to Nara. There was a large temple surrounded by a deer park. Â To my delight, you could purchase crackers to feed the deer. It was quite fun but they could be a bit aggressive (see above photo on right).
Nara was home to one of my favorite temples. Â Absolutely stunning.
We also paid a visit to Hiroshima, which was intense and emotional.
I hate to transition from nuclear bombs to food but we realized that Kobe was on our train ride back to Osaka. We stopped for dinner after visiting the A-bomb Dome. We had to eat, right?
We ate a lot of amazing food. That could be a post on its own.
We took a lot of silly photos.
And beautiful photos…
In the end it was the little touches that really made me fall in love with Japan. A stuffed animal in the subway terminal, for example.
One day I’ll return. It simply must happen.
You might be craving sushi and beef after those photos but how about a milkshake?

Jen, thanks for this post and bringing me back to Japan. We had a chance to go to Tokyo for 10 days during Cherry Blossom time a couple of years ago, and we loved the city. I wish we could visit more cities like you did. That must have been just amazing.

You had a chance to go to Japan? I’m so jealous! I think Jason and I need to take a trip there before we start popping out children!
Love this milkshake by the way. You know I can’t resist anything involving Nutella.

Okay first- love that song and I’m pretty sure the music made me lose track of all time while I was sifting through these photos. Or maybe it’s just super early. Anyway.
I would love to go to Japan! So jealous!
Also … this milkshake. I actually have a ton of Bailey’s left from my St. Patrick’s baking so it’s gonna happen I think.

Thanks for linking up my cake batter shake and your Baileys Nutella Shake sounds amazing. I have Homemade Baileys on hand these days after figuring out how to make it in like 32 seconds…and I need to buzz it up with Nutella. Good call! Your pics of Japan are wonderful and I feel like an ‘insider’ getting a glimpse that I’d otherwise never know about!
