Cardamom Horchata ~ Savory Simple

Every Christmas (with the exception of last year) Jeff and I travel to Tucson, Arizona for the holidays. Most of his immediate family lives there and over the past 6 1/2 years I have really grown to love Tucson like it’s my second home. Spending time there in December means I can slip back into my Spring/Fall wardrobe and enjoy used bookstores, funky coffee shops, family time and copious amounts of authentic Mexican food.

It was in Tucson that I first tried horchata. [Read more...]

Buttermilk Ranch French Fries ~ Savory Simple

You may have heard me chatting about Eat Write Retreat in a post or two. It’s a food blogger conference being held in Philadelphia at the end of this month. It was the very first blogger conference I attended and I am really excited to be going back. They’ve set a very high standard for what to expect at such an event and I hold every other conference up to that standard.

Attendees who registered early this year were automatically entered into an Amazing Apps Culinary Challenge. We were randomly assigned with an ingredient from one of the event sponsors. I knew in advance I would be receiving a goodie box from California Figs, California Ripe Olives, California Raisins or US Potatoes. Can I just tell you how excited I was when I was placed on Team Tater? Potatoes are such a great ingredient to highlight in an appetizer. [Read more...]

My blog wouldn’t be what it is today without my readers and I love each and every one of you. Another reason that I’m excited is because I’ve teamed up with some really amazing food bloggers! We’re giving away a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer in Ice. Isn’t it a gorgeous color? [Read more...]

Smoked Trout Dip ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.net

Earlier I was chatting with Kim, another food blogger, and we discussed how we were both at a conference last year but never actually met. She wondered how that could have happened but it made a lot of sense to me. I’m pretty confortable writing about my life here and chatting with others on social media. I have wonderful friends and am a fairly social person in my day to day life. But I’m also extremely shy in certain social situations. In a room full of strangers I’ll often become introverted and stick with the people I know. I really hope it never comes across as being snobby. I just find engaging with people I don’t know well to be somewhat draining after awhile. I never fully relax.  [Read more...]

Smoked Salmon and Avocado Tartine ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.net

Remember my Foods from Chile Blogger Challenge post from a couple weeks ago? Well, I finally selected a recipe idea from your submissions and am sharing it today! This smoked salmon and avocado tartine uses 2 of the basket ingredients, smoked salmon and Chilean olive oil. Thanks to Jillian B for the excellent suggestion! As soon as I saw her dish concept I knew I had to make it. The idea of pairing rich, buttery smoked salmon with fatty avocado sounded like magic. And it was. The subtle Chilean olive oil perfectly enhanced the ingredients. Brined capers brought just the right amount of salt and acidity while fresh dill really gave the tartine a seasonal lightness.
