Valentine's Day Recipe Roundup - @SavorySimple

I never considered Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic of holidays when I was younger.  You see, February 14th happens to be both my mother and my brother’s birthday.  Now that I’m no longer living with my parents and am, you know, married, I like to do something small to celebrate the holiday aside from calling my family.  Maybe it’s a romantic dinner for two at home, maybe we go out, maybe Jeff (cough cough) brings me some flowers.

This year we’re dining in and I’ve compiled a Valentine’s Day Recipe Roundup with over 60 options for your entire meal.  Enjoy!

Orange Meringue Tarts with Grand Marnier ~ Savory Simple

A few weeks ago it suddenly dawned on me: the end of the world was approaching and I had no plans! This didn’t seem right so I decided to throw a small party on December 21, 2012 to perish in style with my best friends.  Before I could utter the word “apocalypse” this small party evolved into a large shindig with over 20 of my nearest and dearest crammed into the downstairs of our modest townhouse.  And of course I went completely overboard with the food.  One of the many desserts I prepared was my spiced candied orange peel.  Since this recipe only uses the peels and I didn’t want to waste the fruit, I also made orange curd tarts.

Baked Eggnog Doughnuts ~ Savory Simple

It’s eggnog week! I didn’t really plan it this way but here we are.

When I took my first bite of these baked eggnog doughnuts I fell in love immediately.  They’re bursting with eggnog flavor and the sticky sweet glaze holds just the right amount of rum. These beauties are perfect for dessert or dipping in a hot morning cup of coffee. I had to beg friends to come take them away before I ate the entire batch.

In addition to being utterly delicious, I love how simple these are both in preparation and cleanup.  You prepare the batter just as you would muffins: a bowl of wet ingredients added to a bowl of dry ingredients and into the oven they go.   I use a Wilton Nonstick Doughnut Pan and cleanup is a breeze. Don’t get me wrong, I also love my deep fryer but it can be a huge pain to clean. That doesn’t mean I won’t be making fried doughnuts again in the future but for now I’ll stick with these.  Breakfast on Christmas morning?  I think so!

You can find my recipe for baked eggnog doughnuts over at SheKnows!  And don’t forget, there’s still time to enter my Keurig giveaway and bid on some of my cardamom snowdrop cookies (or other tasty treats)!

Eggnog Roulade with Rum Buttercream ~ Savory Simple

Italian meringue buttercream.  I’m not sure that anything else could ever achieve the same rich decadence as this velvety icing. Have you tried it? I’m not talking about buttercream made from whipping butter and confectioners sugar together.  No, I’m referring to the gorgeous frosting that is made by adding hot sugar syrup to whipped egg whites before butter is added.  It’s outstanding and I highly recommend giving it a try. You know what makes Italian meringue buttercream even better?  Rum and eggnog.  And how about if we take this eggnog rum buttercream and roll it up inside a delicate, fluffy eggnog cake? Yup, you need this dessert.  Please visit SheKnows to get my recipe for Eggnog Roulade with Rum Buttercream!

And now without further delay, it’s time for my next holiday giveaway!  Keurig has graciously sponsored this contest and one reader will win a  Keurig MINI Plus Brewing System, seen below:

Spiced Candied Orange Peel ~ Savory Simple

May I take a moment to tell you all how excited I am about Mixed this weekend? Chung-Ah from Damn Delicious is flying into Dulles and on Friday we’re taking a (gulp) 5 hour drive along with friends Jackie and Erin to the Mountain Lake Resort in Pembroke, Va. Dirty Dancing was filmed there and I will gladly carry a watermelon to hang out with some of the amazing guest speakers and talented bloggers in attendance. While I’m packing for the journey, allow me to leave you with these wonderful spiced candied orange peels. They are really addicting. I gave the majority of them away so I would stop shoveling them into my pie hole.  I have no control around these little delicacies.  Do you see all of those tiny specks of vanilla?  Those equal intense flavor.  Add to that some cinnamon, cardamom pods, cloves and a bit of black pepper.  Spicy holiday decadence to the max.
