Malted Condensed Milk Ice Cream ~ Savory Simple

You guys, I’ve been having some issues with rage. Not road rage or anything quite so dangerous. No, I’m talking about a different form of rage. One that I believe is common among many in our society but hasn’t been addressed by the media. I think people are too ashamed to speak up about it right now and if we can raise public awareness, perhaps more citizens will be able to come forward. That’s why I’m willing to talk about my problem right here and now. [Read more...]

Peach Yogurt Muffins `~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.net

I’ve been trying to use less butter in my baking recently. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE BUTTER and you will probably see it appear very soon in another one of my recipes. Butter is amazing and it does marvelous things to baked goods (and toast). But I’ve realized that sometimes I’m too dependent on it. If, for some reason, I use up the 10 pounds of butter I’ve purchased from Costco and won’t be getting back to the store for another day or two, I just assume I won’t be baking.

Quinoa Granola ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.net

It’s the first Thursday of the month! That means it’s time for another post from The Leftovers Club. I started this club last month after having conversations with other bloggers where we lamented that most of our leftovers went to coworkers while we all really wanted to try each others food.  The premise of the club is simple. Once a month, we’re all paired up with a different member of the club and we ship our leftovers to each other. You can make whatever you want as long as it will stay fresh for a several days and ship easily.  This month I’m paired with Shanna from Pineapple and Coconut and, you guys, I’m kind of freaking out right now.  She made Chocolate Dipped Caramel Cream Filled Coconut Shortbread and they’re going to be delivered right to my front door. Seriously, how lucky am I? [Read more...]

Eat Your Books

I’ve always had this weird relationship with cookbooks.  As soon as I walk into a bookstore I make a beeline for the cookbook section and can lose hours of my life as I peruse individual titles.  It feels like certain books call out to me; they glimmer on the shelf and catch my eye. They beg me to bring them home and I’m always tempted even though I know I can find a much cheaper price online.  Usually temptation wins. I love the smell of a brand new cookbook; the shiny crisp new pages filled with bright beautiful food photos and incredible sounding recipes.  I love the instant gratification of a book store. When I know I want a particular cookbook it becomes like an obsession.  I must have it.

So as you may have guessed, I’ve built up a pretty sizable collection of cookbooks. But here’s the thing. When I’m looking for a recipe, I rarely turn to these gems I’ve spent so much time collecting. Why? You probably know; the internet is so much faster. I mean talk about instant gratification. When I need a recipe for banana bread I can type it into Google and voila! I have hundreds of options, often rated by users, within seconds.  How can you beat that?  So I use my internet recipe while my poor neglected cookbooks remain on their shelves, lonely and longing for attention.

At least, that’s how things were a few months ago.  Everything has changed now.  A few months ago I was driving home from an appointment while listening to NPR (my standard driving music these days). I can’t remember what show I was listening to but they were discussing cookbooks.  Someone called in to the show to ask if anyone on the panel had tried a website called Eat Your Books. I’d never heard of it and listened with curiosity.

As you’re reading this I may or may not have power (thank goodness for auto-scheduling!)  Is Hurricane Sandy as big of a mess as the weather people are predicting?  We’ll find out soon enough.  Jeff, Sofi and I are stocked up with emergency booze, emergency board games, emergency candy and of course emergency cat food.  Yes yes we also have batteries and what not.
