Caramelized Onion Arugula Pizza ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.netCaramelized Onion Arugula Pizza

Tonight I’m volunteering at Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation in Washington DC. I attended last year and it’s a great event for an important cause. Taste of the Nation will bring together the city’s best chefs, restaurants and mixologists to raise funds to help ensure no child goes hungry. When Nicole Gulotta from The Giving Table contacted me about donating today’s post to the issue of hunger in America it was a no-brainer. I worked with The Giving Table last year as part of Food Bloggers For Slave Free Tomatoes. We have a unique platform for addressing food-related issues and I think we have a responsibility to do what we can.

Cold Sesame Soba Noodles ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.netCold Sesame Soba Noodles

I’m kind of a nostalgia junkie. I love visiting sites such as this one and enjoying small trips down memory lane. I get this strange feeling in my chest when I see something I’d completely forgotten about. It’s hard to describe the feeling… a jolt? A rush of joy mixed with a touch of longing and a dash of sadness? I always find forgotten memories slightly sad. What else am I forgetting? Regardless, I love the feeling. A single image can bring back so many associated memories. A glimpse of an old toy will take me back to the room where I played with it. 30 years may have passed since I’ve tasted a particular candy but I remember exactly how it tasted the moment I see it. It’s amazing how our minds work, isn’t it?

I don’t live terribly far from my first childhood home. My parents still reside in the house where I lived from age 9 until college so I visit it regularly. But that first house… I want to peek inside so badly and see how it looks 25 years later. Sometimes when I’m in the neighborhood I’ll drive past it. There’s a tot lot right behind the house. I haven’t been there in years but there have been days when I’ve sat on the swings at the tot lot, marveling at the short distance between the playground and my old backyard. It’s a small hill, but when I was little it was like running the length of a football field. At the end of the football field was a massive weeping willow tree that I used to hide under. The tree is still there. [Read more...]

Cheesy Broccoli Bacon Quiche

My recipe project is starting to wind down and I’m so relieved. Relieved and exhausted. I have been cooking for fun a bit more and have some great recipes lined up (hint: I’ve been on a homemade pasta kick). In the meantime, I have just a few more guest posts for you to enjoy while I continue to get caught up on life. Please give a warm welcome to Joanne from Fifteen Spatulas! She’s brought us a fabulous cheesy broccoli bacon quiche. Joanne and I are online friends who will soon be “real world” friends once we attend Eat Write Retreat in May. I can’t wait!

Hi friends! I’m Joanne from Fifteen Spatulas, and it’s my job today to tempt you with something delicious and show you how to make it. One dish everyone should know how to make is a simple quiche-style tart. The best part about a quiche or tart is that it’s a good way to use up leftovers in your fridge and turn it into something new and exciting.

I find my fridge often loaded with too many vegetables. You see, I go to the grocery store trying to be good and healthy by buying tons of fresh produce, but sometimes I end up with too much of something. This week for me it was too much broccoli, but by all means, you could make this tart with asparagus, tomatoes, zucchini, kale, and so on. Use your leftover veggies in a tart and serve it with a little salad for a great lunch.

Valentine's Day Recipe Roundup - @SavorySimple

I never considered Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic of holidays when I was younger.  You see, February 14th happens to be both my mother and my brother’s birthday.  Now that I’m no longer living with my parents and am, you know, married, I like to do something small to celebrate the holiday aside from calling my family.  Maybe it’s a romantic dinner for two at home, maybe we go out, maybe Jeff (cough cough) brings me some flowers.

This year we’re dining in and I’ve compiled a Valentine’s Day Recipe Roundup with over 60 options for your entire meal.  Enjoy!

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with cast iron.  I love all of my enameled Le Creuset pieces but the regular cast iron drives me crazy.  It’s an amazing conductor of heat.  It makes the best crust you’ll ever have on a steak and is also perfect for skillet cakes and baked egg dishes.  But it can be SUCH a pain to clean.  I know proper seasoning makes all the difference, but I bet everyone who uses cast iron has at least one story of endless scouring.
