Tell me your life in 15 songs- Part Two (read Part One)

The main reason I split this into more than one post was because I had to prepare myself to share the next songs. I hate to sound melodramatic but it kind of freaks me out to tell these stories. People can be very judgmental and I’m not great at putting it all out there. Like I said in my last post, I didn’t even intend to share these stories when I began compiling my favorite songs. I just began writing and it happened. I almost hit delete so many times but I’m rolling with it. In its own way this is cathartic.

Biscoff Thumbprint Cookies ~ Savory Simple

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I spent most of the weekend working but I still enjoyed spending time at home with Mr. Savory.

On to more important matters… have you tried cookie butter yet? I swear it’s life changing. Imagine the sweet buttery flavor of shortbread cookies or graham crackers but in a spread that’s the consistency of peanut butter. It’s completely addicting and a joy to use in baked goods.

These Biscoff thumbprint cookies are a fun twist on a classic treat and are guaranteed to be a hit at holiday parties. Get the recipe on SheKnows!

I’m also excited to share my next holiday giveaway. I’ve been a fan of Wüsthof knives for quite some time so I was delighted when they offered to send me their Classic S11 Micro-Serrated Utility Knife for a giveaway.  This razor-sharp knife is perfect for use with fruits, vegetables, baguettes, sausage or as a bar knife.  I’ve gotten quite a bit of use out of it over the past few months and I just know you’re going to love it!

I tackled some uncomfortable subjects on the blog this week and was really inspired by all of the conversation that followed.  Some people disagreed with my point of view and I think that’s a good thing.  The world would be a very boring place if we all agreed with each other all the time.  The important thing to me is that this is a space where we can be respectful of one another and share honest opinions.  Opening up on the site has never been easy but I find that the more I take personal risks, the more I feel connected to everyone who reads and comments.  Greater risk, greater reward.

Cookie Butter Doughnuts ~ Savory Simple

I didn’t discover cookie butter until earlier this summer when we lost power for several days.  I didn’t want to open the refrigerator in the hopes that we’d be able to salvage something (didn’t happen). Everywhere in out neighborhood lost power with the exception of our local hardware store and CVS.  Even the grocery stores were down!  So I decided to pick up some snacks to get us through the day.  I wandered the isles looking at nuts, beef jerky, bread…  And then suddenly I saw it.  Biscoff. A name I’d seen appearing more and more on food blogs but had yet to taste.  I figured why not?  I made the purchase, returned home and tasted it.

Love.  Love at first bite.  Oh the possibilities.  The flavor reminded me of graham crackers but with the consistency of peanut butter!  I thought of cookies, blondies, cake, frosting, cupcakes. The thing is, though, in the end I’d almost rather just sit there and eat it with a spoon like I did on the day we lost power.  It’s so good by itself.  We have half a jar remaining and it’s hidden.  Mr. Savory isn’t allowed to give it to me until I’m planning to bake with it again.

Last time I made doughnuts for the site they were fried (see my apple doughnuts with caramel glaze), as they technically should be.  But I recently acquired a doughnut pan so I decided to use it with this recipe.  I’ve had baked doughnuts before and really they’re just cake.  A bit more dense and less airy.  But there’s nothing wrong with that!   Cake shaped like a doughnut?  Sign me up.  I may try a yeasted, fried version and some point and if I do I will certainly share.

Regarding the glaze, it’s just cookie butter thinned out with cream.  I tried a version with confectioners sugar and the result was cloyingly sweet.  So this glaze doesn’t have a standard doughnut glaze consistency.  It’s oozy and a bit sticky as  you can probably tell from the photo.  You can try adding sugar but I don’t recommend it.  Let the cookie butter sweetness shine on its own!  Also, I actually used Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter for this recipe, not Biscoff.  Very similar taste.

So tell me, what’s your favorite way to use cookie butter?

Fig Newtons ~ Savory Simple

Food can be such a powerful thing.  It brings us pleasure, comfort, guilt and even sadness.  It can energize our bodies or make us feel ill.  It can attach itself to memories, taking us back to our childhood or a happy day with friends.  I’ll always remember the roasted gazpacho from my wedding dinner.  I remember being in college, sitting around with friends eating Cap’n Crunch Berries while watching TV (I confess I was not much of a cook in college).  As a teenager, one of my favorite meals was tomato soup with grilled cheese.  Fancy stuff!  I put ketchup on almost everything.  My grandma made great pistachio cake and my mother was known for excellent blintz souffle and sweet pecan kugel.  As a child I definitely had a sweet tooth.  These days if I really want to transport into the past I’ll go for graham crackers, oatmeal cream pies or Fig Newtons.  Not all at once.

What are some of your food memories?  Share in the comment section.
