Smoked Trout Dip ~ Savory Simple ~ www.savorysimple.net

Earlier I was chatting with Kim, another food blogger, and we discussed how we were both at a conference last year but never actually met. She wondered how that could have happened but it made a lot of sense to me. I’m pretty confortable writing about my life here and chatting with others on social media. I have wonderful friends and am a fairly social person in my day to day life. But I’m also extremely shy in certain social situations. In a room full of strangers I’ll often become introverted and stick with the people I know. I really hope it never comes across as being snobby. I just find engaging with people I don’t know well to be somewhat draining after awhile. I never fully relax.  [Read more...]

Corn Dog Mini Muffins

Ok, who’s ready for the Super Bowl?  I’m not gonna lie… I’m not really a big football fan.  However, I am thrilled that The Ravens will be playing!  I lived in Baltimore for 10 years and it will always be my home in some ways.  The city takes a lot of flack from the media but it truly is a great, quirky town with a lot going for it.  Mr. Savory is a huge Ravens fan and I will be watching the game with him, cheering for purple all the way.  We’re going to a party and I will be bringing these scrumptious corn dog mini muffins from my dear friend, Chung-Ah. She writes the fantastic, mouth-watering blog Damn Delicious. Might I take a moment to tell you all how wonderful this gal is?  We met in person late last year and instantly clicked.  She’s my favorite gossip buddy and she always makes me laugh.  She’s a West Coast girl and I’m an East Coast girl but thanks to the internet it’s like we’re constantly chatting away in the same room. Please go visit her blog and say hello!

Honey Nut Sunflower Granola Bars

2013 is off to quite an amazing start. A lot of very exciting things are happening at Savory Simple headquarters. I can’t go into many details right now but you’ll probably be hearing less from me for the month of January (and possibly part of February). I will try to check in regularly, hopefully at least once per week.

I can say that I’m working on a very fun recipe project and I am so excited to share it with all of you soon! For now, here’s a tasty honey nut sunflower granola bar recipe that’s both vegan and gluten free. I recently discovered sunflower butter and am loving it in baked goods. The consistency is similar to nut butters but with a more unique flavor. These bars are not as soft and chewy as other granola bars I’ve shared; they’re more dense and firm. A bit crunchy without being dry. Enjoy!

Cheesy Baked Jalapeno Popper ~ Savory Simple

I had a fabulous weekend at Mixed.  I got to meet many online friends in person (special shout outs to Chung-Ah from Damn Delicious and Carrie from Bakeaholic Mama. I miss you already!) Thanks to organizers Paula from Bell’alimento and Susan from She’s Becoming DoughMessTic for such a labor of love.  Thanks to all of the speakers for the informative workshops.  And finally, thanks to the sponsors! It was wonderful spending one-on-one time with KitchenAid, Dreamfields, and everyone else.  We had the time of our lives :)

Spiced Candied Orange Peel ~ Savory Simple

Can I just take a moment to tell you all how excited I am about Mixed Conference this weekend? Chung-Ah from Damn Delicious is flying into Dulles and on Friday we’re taking a (gulp) 5 hour drive along with friends Jackie and Erin to the Mountain Lake Resort in Pembroke, Va. Dirty Dancing was filmed there and I will gladly carry a watermelon to hang out with some of the amazing guest speakers and talented bloggers in attendance. One of my favorite food photographers, Helene Dujardin, will be teaching a workshop! While I’m packing for the journey, allow me to leave you with these wonderful spiced candied orange peels. They are really addicting. I gave the majority of them away so I would stop shoveling them into my pie hole. I have no control around these little delicacies. Do you see all of those tiny specks of vanilla? Those equal intense flavor. Add to that some cinnamon, cardamom pods, cloves and a bit of black pepper. Spicy holiday decadence to the max. I just know you will love these as much as I do.
