Tell me your life story in 15 songs...  That’s not how this started. I was trying to come up with a list of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. A daunting task for sure but a girl needs something to keep her mind occupied while cleaning the kitchen. What defines a favorite song? To me it’s something I can listen to over and over again for years and never grow tired of it. It didn’t take long for 5 songs to turn into 10. And then I forgot an important song which caused my top 10 list to turn into 11 and it was unthinkable to remove a single one. As I looked over these 11 songs, I noticed something. These weren’t simply my favorite songs. Each song represented a time in my life. These were the songs that saw me through the good times as well as the bad. From there I began to fill in the gaps and here we are. My life in 15 songs. I’m breaking it up over a few posts to make it easier for me to share and perhaps easier for you to read. And here’s a disclaimer: it gets personal. I won’t be offended if you skip to the recipes. I promise.

I never considered Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic of holidays when I was younger.  You see, February 14th happens to be both my mother and my brother’s birthday.  Now that I’m no longer living with my parents and am, you know, married, I like to do something small to celebrate the holiday aside from calling my family.  Maybe it’s a romantic dinner for two at home, maybe we go out, maybe Jeff (cough cough) brings me some flowers.

This boozy malted hot chocolate milkshake is total dessert heaven.  As you may have noticed, I love sweets and one of my favorite desserts happens to be ice cream (and yes, I eat it year round. Hooray for heated homes!) You know what makes this dessert even sweeter? Knowing that the ingredients comes with a Fair Trade Certification.

Are you familiar with fair trade?  It’s worth a bit of research if the concept is new to you.  I didn’t learn about it myself until about a year ago when I heard a piece on NPR.  Buying fair trade is a simple way to give back (and what a wonderful gesture during the holiday season).  The primary goal of fair trade is to improve the lives of farmers and those who process raw materials for the foods we enjoy.  In addition to guaranteeing ethical pay for labor, fair trade funds are specifically designated for social, economic and environmental development projects.  You’ve likely heard about unfair labor practices in overseas clothing factories. Well, the same problems exist in the food industry but only now is the information becoming more mainstream (you might remember my post this summer on slave-free tomatoes). Orange Meringue Tarts with Grand Marnier ~ Savory Simple

A few weeks ago it suddenly dawned on me: the end of the world was approaching and I had no plans! This didn’t seem right so I decided to throw a small party on December 21, 2012 to perish in style with my best friends.  Before I could utter the word “apocalypse” this small party evolved into a large shindig with over 20 of my nearest and dearest crammed into the downstairs of our modest townhouse.  And of course I went completely overboard with the food.  One of the many desserts I prepared was my spiced candied orange peel.  Since this recipe only uses the peels and I didn’t want to waste the fruit, I also made orange curd tarts.
