When I was a teenager, food really wasn’t my thing. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. I loved Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken. I loved Cool Ranch Doritos (still do). What I really didn’t love was fresh, real food. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and good quality cheese were not a big part of my teenage diet. One evening my parents took me out to a local Italian restaurant called Piccolo’s and that all changed.

Basil. Bright green, fresh, sweet and fragrant. It’s a smell that reminds me of both spring and summer; of my unruly garden; of pesto pasta with a glass of white wine. I never considered Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic of holidays when I was younger.  You see, February 14th happens to be both my mother and my brother’s birthday.  Now that I’m no longer living with my parents and am, you know, married, I like to do something small to celebrate the holiday aside from calling my family.  Maybe it’s a romantic dinner for two at home, maybe we go out, maybe Jeff (cough cough) brings me some flowers.

How do you do it? How is it possible to interweave a recipe about duck with the horrors of cancer? I’ve lost loved ones to the disease and nearly everyone has or will at some point. I was recently asked to join several other bloggers this week in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer. My mind immediately went to two strong women who lost their battles; a coworker and a good friend. In 2006, my friend died from Leukemia, a form of blood cancer. She was 24 years old. Is her story even appropriate this week? There is no such thing actually is a Leukemia Awareness Month but it gets no publicity. I think every story is worth telling, whether it’s breast cancer, lung cancer or leukemia.
